John A. Thompson, Jr., MD was born in Austin, Texas in 1942. As a boy, Dr. Thompson was fascinated by the medical profession and has devoted his life toward achieving his goal of becoming an innovator in the practice of medicine. He has distinguished himself as a leader in the fields of General Dermatology, Laser Dermatology, and Cosmetic Dermatology.
Dr. Thompson Completed his Pre-Med course work at Georgetown University and his MD, Internship, and Residency in Internal Medicine at Wake Forrest School of Medicine. He completed his Dermatology Residency at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC.
Dr. Thompson also served in the armed forces as medical officer with the U.S. Naval Reserve. While in service, he deployed to Vietnam as a medical officer with the 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Division and the 1st Medical Battalion, 1st Marine Division specializing in Internal Medicine and Dermatology. Due to the intense nature of the tropical climate of Vietnam, Dr. Thompson gained valuable experience treating skin conditions such as various Rashes, Trench Foot, Dyshidrotic Eczema, Bacterial Skin Infections, Tropical Acne, and much more. Before departing Vietnam, Dr. Thompson was promoted to Battalion Medical Officer, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Upon his return to the states, Dr. Thompson was assigned to the Medical Department Commandant’s Staff at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. His distinguished service provided him exceptional medical experience in the fields of Internal Medicine and Dermatology.
Dr. John A. Thompson, Jr. has continued to increase both his medical knowledge and experience. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Dermatology and has completed a fellowship with the National Institute of Health in Dermatology Research. Dr. Thompson is a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. He has also practiced Dermatology in Charlotte, North Carolina for over 35 years. Dr. Thompson was among the first Dermatologists in the Charlotte area to incorporate Laser Technology into a Dermatologic Practice for the treatment of skin conditions. He has also mastered many cosmetic procedures including Botox, Dysport and Injectable Fillers. Dr. Thompson has accumulated many awards and accolades throughout his career and continues to pioneer new advances in dermatologic care in the Carolinas today.
John A. Thompson, Jr., MD’s interests include Immunology, Skin Cancers, and Laser Dermatology. Dr. Thompson has published numerous professional papers on Dermatologic Conditions and Treatments throughout his career. He has traveled to Australia, New Zealand, the former Soviet Union, and throughout the world lecturing with the North American Clinical Dermatologic Society. The experience he gained through his travels has provided him a unique insight into the methods in which medical treatments are performed elsewhere across the globe.
In 1997, Dr. Thompson partnered with Dr. Charles Brown to form the Dermatologic Laser Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. In addition to General Dermatology, Laser Dermatology, and Dermatologic Surgery, DLC also focuses on Cosmetic Dermatology.
